Over the past few years, the rate of dog ownership in America has exploded. And for good reason – dogs are loyal, adorable pets that love unconditionally and serve as much as a member of the family as anything. When you’ve decided to bring home a dog, you have no shortage of choices to make when it comes to breed. When you’re weighing your options, consider bringing home a miniature dachshund. They’re some of the most lovable and adorable creatures imaginable.
Here at Doc’s Mini Dachshunds, we breed and sell these beautiful little dogs and have plenty of experience doing so. They’re available from a very young age so you’ll get to raise them almost from birth. We also have puppies that are slightly older than that if that’s what you’re looking for.

Miniature Dachshund Puppies
Miniature dachshund puppies are the perfect pet, but they didn’t get that way overnight. There’s an interesting history behind how they got to be the way they are today. The word “dachshund” is actually German, and it means “badger dog.” This is because early dachshunds were trained to chase badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals out of their homes so that they could be hunted.
German hunters started to breed miniature dachshunds in the late 19th century in an effort to hunt smaller animals such as rabbits. By breeding smaller and smaller dogs with each other, they eventually created the miniature dachshund breed. While they started out as a crafty hunting breed, these dogs eventually became some of the most beloved pets imaginable.
These miniature dachshunds first came to the United States in the late 1800’s but decreased in popularity due to their German roots during both World Wars. Some took to calling them Badger Dogs, Weiner Dogs, or Liberty Hounds during that time. But their popularity eventually recovered, and they are now among the most popular breeds in America.

What to Expect from Your Mini Dachshund
Dachshunds are still capable of hunting, but they mostly serve as the typical family pet these days. Still, they have it in their nature to chase small animals and birds. They’re energetic little guys and will play fetch with tremendous determination. Generally, they never grow past 12 pounds, remaining “miniature’ for their entire lives.
If you do buy a miniature dachshund, you’ll find yourself in good company. Notable dachshund owners in history include Presidents John F. Kennedy and Grover Cleveland, author E.B. White, artists Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, and newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst.
These dogs tend to live a good long life, typically making it at least 12 to 15 years. So you can be reasonably sure that you’re going to have your furry friend for a good, long time.
