Identifying A Puppy Scammer

When it comes to shopping for a puppy online, it always pays off to be extra vigilant when you are looking around at a breeder’s website. Here are some helpful tips that can help you determine whether or not you might be getting scammed.

What are key signs of a scam:

  1. Price: If the price of the puppy is significantly lower than the standard market average, especially if they tout that the puppy is AKC/CKC registered. It is most likely a scam.
  2. Stock Photos: If an image looks well produced and somewhat staged, do a simple Google image search with their photo to see if it is found on more than a couple of websites. A true breeder would take their own pictures.
  3. No in person meetings: This is one that can be tricky as sometimes your chosen breeder lives in a different state than you do, but if you are getting your puppy from a local breeder and they refuse to meet up prior to paying, you might be looking at a scam.
  4. Face Time or other video calls: If they’re not willing to do Face Time or they find a problem with their Face Time, there is the likelihood that you are involved with a scam.

These are just some of the ways that you can identify potential scams, however, there will be times that some of the above wont directly implicate a scam so always make sure that you do your due diligence when shopping online for a new puppy.
